MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers, a time-out programme for mothers with children under school age (0-5) years.

A MOPS group provides a caring, accepting atmosphere for all mothers and young children, where mums have the opportunity to share in a time of instruction, discussion and craft. Teaching is based on Biblical principles.

MOPS strives to fulfil the mother’s need for friendship, the need for creativity and the need for spiritual growth. It is fun, fulfilling and reaches out to both the believer and the non-believer. While mum attends MOPS, the children are cared for in MOPPETS, a programme that offers a loving, learning environment for children.

What is so unique about a MOPS group?

MOPS is not ‘just another playgroup’. It is a time to encourage, develop and equip mothers of preschoolers - as women, wives, and mothers. It is a time-out programme designed specifically to help meet unique needs of mothers of young children.

Is a MOPS group a Bible study?

No, and for a specific reason. Often a format that is strictly Bible study is not appealing to those brought up outside of church. Therefore, a teaching format of topical interest is given from the Biblical perspective. This provides practical Christianity, which allows all women to feel comfortable from their first visit to a MOPS group.

How often does a MOPS group meet?

MOPS groups usually meet for two hours once a fortnight, say on the first and the third (Wednesday) of the month with a Night MOPS or something different on the fifth (Wednesday) of the month.

This allows time for proper preparation by the leaders, avoids burnout, and yet meets the needs of the women attending. The MOPS calendar follows the school year and groups do not usually meet during school holiday periods. The MOPS group programme is adaptable to the individual needs of different communities.

 What do the children do?

MOPPETS is the children’s counterpart programme, which is made possible through the supporting church, while MOPS is taking place. Children under school age (0-5 years) are cared for in a loving, warm atmosphere. The children grow spiritually, socially, and creatively during this time through a carefully planned programme. The MOPPETS programme is as important to the children as MOPS is to the mothers.

How many women do you need to operate a MOPS group?

The initial effort to enlist the support of your church usually involves one or two interested people who catch the vision of MOPS as an outreach ministry. Start small and simple. The Coordinator, MOPS Mentor, MOPPETS Leader are the essential people in starting a MOPS group. Other suggested leadership roles are: Creative Activities Leader, Finance, Hospitality, Discussion Group Leader, & Publicity. These positions are often combined and re-delegated as others join the leadership team.

All leadership positions must be held by mothers of preschoolers with the exception of MOPS Mentor and MOPPETS Leader.

Where there are only 1-2 leaders available, consider MOPS@

Why is MOPS a chartered organisation?

MOPS is chartered to protect the integrity and fundamentals of this Christ-centred organisation. Once chartered, you may be assured that all MOPS groups will have the same basic format and purpose.

Do groups have to charter through a church?

Yes. MOPS (NZ) Inc. requires groups to charter through local churches or parachurch organisations. MOPS is inter-denominational.

How much does it cost to charter and operate a MOPS group?

The initial chartering fee is $150 and there is an annual renewal of $150 (includes GST). Operating costs are minimal and can often be met by self-generating funds once your group is established. It is ideal to have the chartering church include the MOPS ministry in their budget. Many churches have funded MOPS through the Missions, Women’s Ministry, or Christian Education budget.

What happens once we lodge a Charter Application?

After your application is approved, you will receive :

  • The MOPS Handbook containing detailed explanations of how to begin and develop a MOPS and MOPPETS programme.
  • Positional Handbooks for each leadership position.
  • The chartering package will include the leadership magazine Connections, MUMSense magazine, and other material that will assist in establishing the programme in your church.

You will be contacted by your Regional Coordinator who will support you through the ‘getting started’ stage.

On a regular basis, you will receive :

  • a copy of the leadership magazine Connections, containing leadership training materials and articles of interest to MOPS leaders.
  • Training opportunities, such as conferences and regional training meetings, are also provided.
  • Ongoing support and assistance is offered to local groups by letter, phone, email, and MOPS websites.

What is the benefit of chartering?

By chartering with MOPS (NZ) Inc. the church gains access to the leadership training, resources, and expertise of an international ministry. The ongoing training, support and encouragement offered assists leaders in maintaining their enthusiasm and vision for the ministry. The combined network of MOPS groups builds an effective outreach of ministry for the women in the community, and provides on-going support and new ideas to established groups.
